Monday Morning at the Piano

Hey it’s Brian.  This is probably going to seem like a weird response to Christine Coke’s post “Saturday night part 1.”  but that post really made me want to write music.  i agree w/ kait, “last week’s alcohol” is a great title, and there was something about the techno idea that was interesting to me.  so imagine all of this pretty music w/ a techno beat behind it.  like a Death Cab song.

so yea, I just kind of sat down at my piano for the past hour and played, and i like some of it, and some of it is complete crap.  usually i would then give it a couple days, then go back and listen to it and pick out the melodies that aren’t crap and write them down.  but, in case anyone out there is looking for some piano music to listen to, here they all are.  the first track and the last track are the best i think, i have a nice simple treatment of what i think is the verse material in the first track, and then i found my chorus in the last track, and the prechorus in the last like 2 minutes while looking for a bridge.

i don’t know why this makes sense to me tone-wise.  i know it’s really sad music, but i want to put a beat, and lyrics and scenes that are telling this story overtop of it

also i kind of mumble a lot in the second one.  sorry bout that.

  1. Okay. So I listened to all of it this morning. I will admit that it was in the background and I wasn’t listening intently. It’s very pretty. I highly recommend taking a listen while you’re doing homework or checking email. The first and fourth tracks are the nicest to listen too but I also liked the 3rd. The 2nd, as promised does have a good deal of mumbling.
I have no idea how this connects to CC’s weekend fantasia. But I do like it so I’ll be really interested to see where it goes.

  2. Brian, just curious what you think is sad about the story? Is it the whole drunk and disorderly thing?, or the humiliation of the two girls kissing on the dance floor?, or Christine being hit on by the guy who didn’t call, who missed his chance with her? or maybe all of it?

  3. Ella, don’t discount what a techno beat can do to a sad melody. Your questions are really valid though.

  4. Hm, I’m not sure how I inspired this, haha, but I’m curious to see what you do with it!

  5. It’s not that I think it’s sad in any way - I think (and I’m sorry if this is a little intense CC), I think it’s because CC seemed disconnected from it. you know? Just that fact that she’s watching it, and watching it as a blogger and writer removes her from the events on some level. It feels like there’s an inherent disconnect there. so on a personal level I certainly relate (in fact i’m possibly superimposing my personal experiences on top of this) - to being at a party and also not at a party. to thinking about how i’ll tell the story the next day, and analyzing it on a certain level.

it may all come from the fact that this is a well structured story, and a well-told account of an evening… and it happens to be of a kind of evening that one doesn’t usually tell in this way.

i don’t know if any of this makes sense, but i think there’s something here. it doesn’t necessarily need to be addressed in the song, but i’m really interested in the tone i’m exploring. i’ll take a look at this again either later this week or when we get back from penn state and show you guys what it could sound like w/ a techno beat under (over?) the musical fantastia i’m writing.

GOD i want this thing to be like 7-8 minutes and f-ing EPIC. you know? C.C.’s post is so f-ing epic.

  6. I dunno where you’re going with this Brian, but it’s cool that you’re all excited about it. My post was not epic though! haha :)

  7. don’t you ‘haha’ at me!

it was epic! you’re wrong. you’re all wrong! i’m gonna go write my 8 minute mini-techno-opera for a DIFFERENT living musical. then you’ll be sorry!

  8. Oh, Brian…oh, Brian.

  9. hey, do you have the lyrics to run away with me? i would greatly appreciate it if you could send them to me! not sheet music!! thanks - Mandy

  10. well i’m excited and can totally see your vision :)
