College is amazing

Music: Lupe Fiasco - Fighters

Tonight I sat across from my co-TAs, nursing a warm beer that coated the roof of my mouth and I listened as they shared their life stories. Jack, who is 21, may be one of the most articulate people I’ve had the pleasure of hearing. His words just roll over me and I get swept up in what he says and the pictures he paints. Then Rissie, a junior at LAC, has this infectious laugh and optimism that makes me believe in fairy-tale things like happy endings and everlasting love. I know the three of us are supposed to be working together in creating an amazing experience for the eighteen freshmen who are coming tomorrow, but these two are quickly changing my life. We come from completely different backgrounds yet we’ve found so many commonalities. It may be a “job” on my resume, but right now, it feels like a privilege to be able to sit down and slowly peel away the layers and find out who someone truly is.

I kept shaking my head and saying “I can’t believe I’ve only known you guys for two days,” but that’s one of the great things about LAC. The seclusion of living here compels everyone to find excitement in each other. I want to talk to other people, I want to spend two hours letting someone unload on me and then doing the same in return. Jack told us something incredibly personal tonight and he prefaced it by claiming “I haven’t told anyone this at LAC.” I felt honored and I understood why he felt comfortable sharing that part of himself with us. At any college, I suspect, there are people who just dive right into your life and within hours of knowing him/her you recognize the potential for a strong friendship. Rissie, Jack, and I just mesh very well. Our personalities balance each other out and I’m finding myself thinking these are my friends, not just my co-workers.

Maybe it’s just Rissie and Jack, maybe it’s the school, or maybe it’s that I’m just growing up a little bit. Whatever it is I just know that whenever I’m at LAC, whenever I’m around certain people I feel myself changing and maturing and becoming a true adult.
